While the manufacturing cost of an ARM powered TabletPC is around 300 ~ 350 USD for a 10” model and 150 ~ 200 USD for a 7” model, Microsoft reportedly plans to charge tablet manufacturers a huge 90 ~ 100 USD for a Windows 8 ARM Edition.

We were talking about Intel’s strangely failed attempt at the mobile phone market a while ago and about the potentially successful entry into the TabletPC market where it stood a real chance against ARM platforms, thanks to the huge PowerVR GPU coming soon.

The thing is that this “successful entry” on the TabletPC market was mostly based on the fact that there weren’t as many restrictions when it came to heat dissipation and power consumption concerning TabletPCs in general.

Another Intel advantage was supposed to be Microsoft’s next Windows 8 operating system that was supposed to level the field in the tablet business as both ARM and x86 processors would have the same platform to show their muscle.

It seems that this is quickly becoming a huge disadvantage.

Microsoft asks a huge amount of money for a WoARM (Windows on ARM) license. It won’t provide support for currently windows compatible software, so the software base will be very limited at first.

Coupled with the fact that Intel’s CPUs and chipsets will certainly be more expensive than competing ARM platforms, Microsoft’s OS fee will certainly beat another nail in Atom’s coffin.

An equal or better performing Intel Atom powered tablet would probably stand a real change against a tablet using the powerful and efficient ARM Cortex A15 processor.

Even if it would have been a little bit pricier, Intel’s marketing money can brainwash any unsuspecting buyer and the Intel tablets would have stood a chance.

But add 30% (for Microsoft’s OS) next to those 10% to 30% (price difference for Intel’s platform) and you get a tablet that’s around 40% more expensive than an ARM based counterpart running Android.

Korean giant corporation Samsung has just announced that it started manufacturing 4Gb memory chips using 20nm manufacturing technology, on its official website. Remember that you need two such 4 Gb memory chip to have 1 GB of LPDDR2 RAM in you smartphone, as 1 GB (Gigabyte) is equal to 8 Gb (Gigabits).

Up until now, Samsung has been using four chips manufactured in the 30 nm technology process to obtain a 2 GB memory chip and, as such, mobile devices like smartphones with such a memory were hard to find.
By using the 20 nm manufacturing process, Samsung can now build 2 GB multi-layer memory chips that are just 0.8 millimeters thick. This is approximately 20% thinner than a 4-stack of 30 nm memories.

Starting mass production on the 20 nm manufacturing line means that the availability of such thin and modern chips is going to increase sharply in the following period.

As we previously explained, going for a smaller manufacturing process not only offers the chip builder products that use less power and work at higher frequencies, but it also allows for a greater production at much better costs.

When shrinking a chip design from 30 nm to 20 nm, the manufacturer will obtain a much larger number of chips out of the same silicon wafer.

So, the price of the chip is going down, the availability increases, the power consumption is lower or the same when clocking the memory chips at 1066 MHz and the thickness is reduced.

These factors and a sum of others as well will lead to an increase in the number of mobile devices sporting a 1066MHz fast 2 GB or LPDDR2 memory.

Samsung’s greatest R&D division, the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology has reportedly published and detailed research on the Barristor in the journal Science on the 17th of May. This is the wonder chip that researchers were looking for.

We’ve talked about the amazing properties of Graphene before here. And we also reported on silicene’s arrival to the market before graphene in this article.

The most important fact about graphene is that this material allows electrons to move through it 200 times easier than silicon.

Practically, if you build a CPU using graphene instead of silicon, it will likely run at 300 GHz instead of 3 GHz, considering that the technology only achieves half of the normal graphene electron mobility.

IBM even thought about theoretical 1000 GHz chips using graphene.

Graphene was a difficult material to work with because it is a semi-metal, and the electron flow can’t be easily stopped.

Using it in cooling solutions is indeed a good idea as no current is passing through it, but the higher electron mobility might help dissipate the heat energy faster in a cooling base.

There was talk about a combination between silicon and graphene, but it seems that such a combination is not desirable.

Trying to transform graphene in a semiconductor radically decreases the much wanted electron mobility. That was the silicene research.

Getting back to our wonderful Samsung graphene chip, we can tell you that the Korean scientists developed the graphene-silicon Schottky barrier.

This will allow or stop the electron flow by controlling the height of the barrier.

Samsung also built a basic logic gate device and demonstrated that the device can successfully fulfill one function. The basic operation the device can manage is adding.

The transistor-like gate was called a Barristor.

Samsung’s research institute owns other 9 major graphene-related patents and is currently the only company to have built a working graphene computing micro device.

Michael Prokop announced last night, May 17th, the immediate availability for download and testing of the first Release Candidate of the upcoming grml 2012.05 Debian-based operating system.

Dubbed Ponyhof and based on Debian Testing (15/05/2012), grml 2012.05 RC1 comes with the missing tools from the downsized 2011.12 release of grml, and the team revived the grml-small flavour. The final release of the grml 2012.05 Linux distribution is scheduled for the end of the month.

“Please test the ISOs and everything you usually use and report back, so we can complete the stable release soon. If no major problems come up, the next iteration will be the stable release, which is scheduled for end of May.” – said Michael Prokop in the official announcement.

Highlights of grml 2012.05 RC1:

· Linux kernel 3.3.6 (with no additional modules);
· Added grml-hwinfo tool to retrive NUMA information from numactl;
· Re-added simplified support for brltty;
· Added support for the 9p-virtio filesystem, to mount DCS-directory (debs, configuration and scripts – see man grml-autoconfig for details);
· The ssh bootoption can be used to set a SSH password for the “grml” user and a new password for root;
· /media is now used as the default mount target;
· Removed the grml-feedback utility;
· Modified the end of the main syslinux config file with a few kB of lines made of # characters;
· Fixed lots of annoying bugs.

About grml

Grml is a live CD Linux distro based on Debian aimed mainly at system administrators. It’s designed to run from the live CD and does not need a permanent installation.

Some use cases for Grml include system rescue, system and network administration, or an ‘on-the-go’ work environment. Grml comes with 2GB worth of packages included in the ISO and uses on-the-fly decompression to make them available to the user as needed.

Download grml 2012.05 RC1 right now from Softpedia. Remember that this is a development release and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended to be used for testing purposes only.

INDIANAPOLIS — All season long, Frank Vogel has hammered home a message, one simple, easy to understand: We’re good.

Not two years from now, when this crop of 20somethings has a little more seasoning. Today, now.

When Miami pulverized the Pacers twice early in the season? Bleep it, we’re good.

When third-seeded Indiana entered the playoffs behind the Heat and Bulls in the standings and the Celtics and Knicks in the minds of many? We’re good.

When talking heads predicted Miami would roll through Indiana in the second round? We’re good.

For some, it was easy to believe. George Hill went to the playoffs his first three seasons with San Antonio; David West played in a conference semifinal with New Orleans. But for Darren Collison and Tyler Hansbrough, for Roy Hibbert and Paul George, they needed to hear it. You’re heavyweights, you’re the big dogs, Vogel told them. And they needed to believe.

Guess what? They do.

There was a cool, confident team on the Bankers Life Field House floor in their 94-75 Game 3 rout of the Heat on Thursday, and it wasn’t the defending conference champs. After mucking it up with Miami in the first half, Indiana pulled away with a 51-32 second-half surge that Heat coach Erik Spoelstra called “a good old-fashioned butt-kicking.” The Pacers did it their way, controlling the defensive glass (36-25), pounding the ball into the post and raining down three-pointers at a scorching clip (57.1 percent). The defense contained LeBron James (22 points) and shut down Dwyane Wade (five). The Pacers played their game, and they were good.

Up 2-1, this is Indiana’s series to lose now. Chris Bosh is gone, and the Heat have begun to come unspooled. They got nothing from Wade, who looked disconnected from the game, right up until he got into it with Spoelstra during a timeout in the third quarter. Spoelstra downplayed the incident (“Anyone who [has not] been a coach or a player has no idea of how often those things happen”) but hinted that, perhaps, there was something Wade was dealing with.

“He will never make excuses and we won’t do that as well,” Spoelstra said. “At this point in the season, no one is 100 percent.”

Miami is adrift, making up lineups (Dexter Pittman, who played 301 minutes in the regular season, got the start at center in Game 2) and offense on the fly. Missed jumpers, missed runners, missed layups. Miss after miss after miss, and the Heat kept looking over at the bench, as if Spoelstra wasn’t just supposed to design the play, but shoot the ball for them. James and Wade are trying to will the team to wins (“You can see it in their eyes,” said Hibbert) but against a confident and complete opponent like Indiana, that strategy just isn’t going to get it done.

The Heat have two days to make adjustments, but poking holes into Indiana’s game plan won’t be easy. The Pacers aren’t reinventing the wheel. They have an elite defender in Paul George to blanket Wade and waves of others to throw at James. When LeBron slides over to the power forward spot, West made sure he feels it, banging James with elbows to the back. When the Heat match Shane Battier with West, he camps out in the paint and simply waits for spots to outmuscle him. Hibbert lingers nearby, waiting for second-chance opportunities, waiting to utilize his 7-foot-2 frame against a team with no option for him. Miami could counter with more Joel Anthony and Ronny Turiaf, but it would be adding two non-scorers to an offense already struggling to put up points.

“We will not back down or take anything from any team,” West said. “We are not going to be pushed around.”

And there is this: Indiana can still play better. Hibbert put up a monster stat line in Game 3 (19 points, 18 rebounds, five blocks), but feeding him in the post has become a blooper reel. Miami fronts everyone, and its speed on the weak side with James and Wade disrupts virtually every entry pass. Hibbert has had a few moments, but his ability to control the glass, to make Miami a “one-and-done team” has been his biggest contribution.

“I’ve embraced that role,” Hibbert said. “I let the offense come to me and try to be an anchor of the paint and make things difficult for the other team.”

Miami is being pushed to the brink by a Pacers team that believes this is how it was supposed to play out. When Vogel offered them the day off on Friday, West, speaking for the team, turned it down. We’re all coming in for a film session, West said. We’ve got a good thing going. Let’s keep it up.

Yes, the Pacers are good. Finally, it seems, they know it.

You’d think that a company fresh out of revealing a new, color, flexible display technology for e-readers would scramble to get such an item out as soon as possible.

Plastic Logic has just finished smashing and grinding into dust that particular assumption, having announced that it will not, in fact, use that flexible display in an e-reader.

More precisely, it won’t be making any new e-readers, period.

If it had chosen to keep trying to carve out a slice of the segment, PL would have released a 10.7-inch business reader, called Que.

Alas, after examining all aspects of the business, the company decided to “cease its e-reader product development activities and focus on other applications for its flexible plastic displays.”

There supposedly already are several manufacturers interested in the flexible panel technology, so we’ll definitely see more of it, not just on the e-reader front (assuming there are e-reader makers interested in it) but also in larger displays.

It all boils down to how many collaborators the company gathers and how many licensing deals it inks.

“[Plastic Logic will] actively develop licensing and technology partnerships to exploit its e-reader related capabilities in terms of rugged, plastic displays as well as driver and viewing optimization software,” the company reportedly said.

“Entering this market two years ago was a very logical step to take. It was growing fast. However, this market is driven by tough price competition and many companies are now relying on content sales exclusively to make an economic return and to cross-subsidize hardware. Therefore, for a company at Plastic Logic’s stage of development, the e-reader model as a sole route-to-market does not make commercial sense at the current time.”

Plastic Logic’s business decision has raised job concerns at its Cambridgeshire, UK plant, where up to 40 people may find themselves unemployed in short order. The facilities in Russia and Germany might be restructured too.

Today, part of the team at Softpedia was invited to be present at SONY’s World Photography Awards in Bucharest, Romania. During the photography exibit we got the chance to receive a great presentation about SONY’s new NEX-F3 and SLT A37 digital cameras.

We’ve already introduced you to the SONY SLT A37 DSLR here and it comes with many features from its more experienced and capable brother, the SONY SLT A57.

The world photography awards is a great initiative by the WPO (World Photography Organization) that wants to encourage people of all ages and nationalities to take on photography and unveil their world to everybody else using undiscovered talents.
There were over 100,000 participants in the contest from over 170 countries and a serious 40% increase in participants from the host country, Romania.

We will be adding some more pictures from the event, but now we’re giving you a complete presentation of SONY’s new NEX-F3 digital photo camera.

The new NEX-F3 is well-connected to the design of its predecessor, the NEX-C3, but it borrows some features from the STL line and higher targeted NEX models.

The most obvious addition is the built-in flash that the previous model completely lacked.

We also get higher quality videos that are now FullHD instead of 720p.

The beautiful images are captured using a full 16.1 MP APS-C sensor, 23.4 by 15.6 millimeters in size, and they are processed by a newer generation of SONY’s Bionz sensor processor.

This is a processor that’s more powerful than the one inside the mid-range NEX-5N.

The sensibility range is very wide and the NEX-F3 is capable of capturing images at a high 16000 ISO.

The same “Auto Portrait Framing” feature is present just like in SONY’s SLT A57, along with the “Clear Image Zoom” feature, also from the SLT A57, which uses just a hint of digital zoom without disrupting the image quality.

Another useful addition is the 3” 920,000 pixel tilt screen that can be rolled completely up to 180 degrees and that can be used to take auto portraits.

The new NEX-F3 camera uses the same E-mount for the lenses and it lacks the image stabilization that the SLT A57 has. Instead, here, with the NEX-F3, SONY has lenses with image stabilization inside.

The new SEL18200LE E18-200mm F3.5-6.3 OSS LE telezoom lens has even better image stabilization than the old model when it comes to shooting movies, while being 12% lighter.

The maximum resolution is 4912 x 3264 with images in 3:2 or 16:9 formats.

The new SONY NEX-F3 is also more affordable and even easier to use than the NEX-C3.

It comes without a direct charger, and thus, it uses a USB one, while the battery life is about 17 % longer considering SONY states that the NEX-F3 can take up to 470 different photos with a single charge.

The launch price is 50 USD below the initial price of the NEX-C3 and sits at about 600 USD together with the SEL1855 18-55mm zoom lens.

Availability is set for next month and the new SEL18200LE telezoom lens will be available a month later, for around 850 USD.

That’s about 471 EUR for the initial camera and 18-55mm zoom lens KIT and another 670 EUR for the SEL18200LE telezoom lens.

Although the AMD Brazos 2.0 launch is still scheduled for next month, Japanese company Fujitsu is listing the new Esprimo EH30/HT desktop all-in-one system as available, on its official website.

AMD’s APUs have been, and still are, a great success for the company and will probably help things change in the PC market.

The next generation of low-power APUs from AMD is still based on TSMC’s now very mature 40nm process.

Improvements come in the form of an increased clock frequency and a heap of new features like USB 3.0 for example.

The Fujitsu EH30/HT system comes with an AMD E2-1800 APU that integrates a very capable iGPU, called AMD Radeon HD 7340.

The E2-1800 MHz APU runs at a 1700 MHz frequency. It has two “Zacate” processing cores, each with 512 KB or Level 2 cache.

The APU also integrates a memory controller running a single 64-bit channel able to handle DDR3 memory modules up to DDR3-1333.

The AMD Radeon HD 7340 iGPU has 80 shaders and runs at a default frequency of 523 MHz, but it can turbo up to 680 MHz when the 3D tasks thrown at it are very demanding.

The TDP is just 18 watts and that helps the Fujitsu Esprimo EH30/HT stay very quiet during movie play or other activities.

The maximum system memory option is 8 GB in two SO-DIMM slots supporting DDR3-1333 MHz modules.

The display is a Super Fine LCD VX TFT color LCD LED backlight with claimed “high-speed response and high resolution with high color purity” and a 20” diagonal size.

The maximum resolution is 1600 x 900, with a 0.276 mm pixel pitch.

A DVD-Writer is also included next to the 1 TB HDD. There is also an SD Card reader and a DBV-T included along with 6 USB 2.0 ports and, unfortunately there is no mention about USB 3.

The system also comes with Gigabit LAN, Wireless N, Bluetooth 4.0, a wireless keyboard and mouse set along with a remote control.

The multimedia features are rich, as the HD webcam comes with face recognition and an auto-off feature for the system when you leave it for a longer period. Also, the integrated speakers come with DTS certification.

All this can consume a maximum of 68 watts. That’s less than a light bulb and the weight is just 5.8 Kg. That would be 12.7 pounds in imperial.

Unfortunately, the FMV models are only available in Japan and the price is around 1,230 USD.

That would be around 970 EUR for the European buyers.

A great price for the package, but you might have to ask your friends from Japan to buy and send you one.
